Note that these web-pages still show the old design machines. So the
pictures are not necessarily fully identical with the new, improved
designs.
TA Machine Tools manufactures reed-making machines for the main double reed instruments:
- Oboe reeds (and oboe d'amore, English horn/cor anglais, baritone/bass oboe, baroque and classical oboe);
- Bassoon reeds (and contra bassoon, baroque and classical bassoon);
- Bagpipe reeds
There are three types of machines in the standard range:
1. The Gouging Machine (400 series) which cuts the inside surfaces of the raw cane as the first main stage in the reed making process. These machines can be ordered as 'standard' machines or can be adapted to suit almost any individual specification.
2. The Shaping Machine and hand-shaper (800 series) which shape the gouged canes to the desired form. A comprehensive range of interchangeable shapes can be selected for these tools, or shapes can be made to special order.
3. The Profiler, which cuts the outer surfaces of the assembled reed-canes as far as the playing stage.
- The standard profilers (F600 series) for oboe-type reeds cut the complete 'scrape'.
- The standard profiler for bassoon-type reeds (F650 series) finishes the pre-formed tip of the reed: the 'Tipping Machine'.
- The type F750 bassoon profiler (currently being considered for further development) which cuts the outer surfaces of gouged canes before assembly as a reed.
Variations of the standard machines are produced from time to time - e.g. at present, an experimental machine for profiling the inside of gouged canes for bassoon reeds (new type 550). R & D is also currently underway in new designs for machines producing reeds for clarinet and saxophone.
Commissions can also be considered for machines and other reed-making tools to special order.
